Would you like a salad with your heart bypass

YOU RECEIVE AN SMS– “Your doctor is running three hours late for your surgery today so we have moved your check-in time to 4.00pm”. You arrive at the hospital, calm and relaxed after watching a video sent to you on your phone from your doctor, explaining the procedure and what to expect in recovery. You walk into reception and scan your phone to check-in. The welcome team greet you by name, and confirm your dietary requirements during your stay. You are taken to the arrival room, where you are provided with comfortable and flattering clothes to wear. You are provided with an internet-enabled tablet and talked through the content which includes notes from your doctor, other people’s experiences, details on your recovery program, and entertainment options – naturally.

Compare the above to your last hospital experience. We need to put people at the centre of the healthcare system, and use widely available technology to make healthcare a more personal experience for all, by valuing the patients’ time and anxiety.
